By the time I got to the first real boss battle with Desther the traitor cleric who steals the cure Tomi was so crippled I couldn't win that fight after a dozen tries. He got more HP each level and other level-based improvements but most of is gear didn't keep up because of the armor/dexterity problem. Every time I tried to use Tomi he quickly became a hindrance because he effectively was not really progressing. But the original story didn't it just assumed each companion would update according to their class at regular intervals. Yes exactly The original two expansions gave you access to your companions equipment.
